La ruota libera consente la trasmissione del moto in un solo senso di rotazione ed è particolarmente indicata per proteggere la trasmissione di macchine agricole con componenti ad elevata inerzia come ad esempio le rotoimballatrici. La trasmissione della potenza è effettuata tramite dei naselli di acciaio temprato che vengono spinti contro il mozzo da molle piatte.
